White Sox Player Review: Joe Crede

The Knights got off to a slow start and they continue to sputter along leaving them in the cellar of the IL South at 7-20, tied for the worst mark with the Toledo Mud Hens, and in the throes of a five game slide. Duente Heath was the first of what are now 22 transactions with righty Matt Zaleski going on the disabled list, righty Brian Omogrosso (promoted) and lefty Donnie Veal (optioned by the parent White Sox) being the latest to be added to a growing list.

In addition to losing Crain, the Twins lost Matt Guerrier to the Dodgers, Brian Fuentes to the Athletics, and Jon Rauch to the blue Jays. Additionally, their former all star closer Joe Nathan is coming back after missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery. Also, a week into spring training Twins all star first baseman Justin Morneau had yet to play and there was no time table for his return as he continues to deal with a concussion he suffered mid way through last season. With the subtractions and uncertainty of key Twins, it seems that the Sox have overtaken Minnesota as they, along with the Detroit Tigers, battle for the division.

Post game — Thank you to all who kept checking back here for updates during the game. As i said, this is also Spring Training for me and i ran into some glitches posting from the park. I was able to utilize Twitter and Facebook and will continue to do so and figure out a way to get to post here.

Coming off a season in which the Tigers went 27-45 against their AL Central division foes, it is imperative that the Tigers show well against a sale jerseys team that took 12 of 18 from Detroit in 2008.

The Tigers will need to neutralize Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin if they are to continue their three-game winning streak. Ramirez lit up Tiger pitching in ’08, hitting .340 in 14 games, while Quentin was equally as effective as he hit for .333. The two combined for 23 RBIs and seven home runs.

He’s on the 40-man roster and is a slightly-lesser version of Lucas Harrell without the major-league experience. Marquez, touted as a groundball phenom when acquired from the Yankees in the Nick Swisher [REDACTED] trade, had a 46 percent ground ball rate in Charlotte-good, but not Harrell’s 52 percent grounder rate. He’ll have a shot at the rotation this spring, but it’s tough to see Marquez separating himself from the pack. Then again, that can be said for all these pitchers.

Hitting with runners in scoring position with less than two outs, hitting into a high number of double plays, and not throwing runners out at second are just a few of the simple tasks they struggle with. So far the Sox have beaten themselves in many games, but if a few key players step it up the sky is the limit.

Humber, Sox Lose To Tribe

25. Chicago Cubs – It will be interesting to see if the Cubs make any significant moves on the free agent market this offseason to close the gap between the top and bottom of the NL Central.

Simply put, Harrell doesn’t strike out enough opponents while walking too many. He appeared in eight games-three starts-with the 2010 White Sox and hardly looked impressive in those 24 innings, walking 17 and striking out 15. Like Humber, Harrell has been mediocre in triple-A, posting FIPs of 4.34 and 4.46 in 2009 and 2010 with Charlotte. Harrell doesn’t have much-if any-edge over Humber, and that’s not saying a whole lot.

Chicago pushed the lead to 6-2 against Vinnie Pestano in the eighth when Pierre drove in another run with a single. He added to his Major League best stolen base total with his 68th steal.

But Owens’ lack of power seems to have been masked over the years by his ability to steal bases. Owens went 30/43 on stolen base attempts in 2008 with Charlotte and stole 32 while with the sale jerseys in 2007, giving the impression that he epitomized the idea of “Ozzieball”-the idea of doing the little things such as bunting and stealing bases which some sale jerseys fans bought into in 2005 (a year in which the team hit 200 home runs).

Adam Dunn, Gordon Beckham, Brent Morel or Mark Teahen, and Alex Rios were thought to be the guys that would put the southsiders among the best in the American league.

I knew and liked Red Sox outfielder Tony Conigliaro. He was phenom. To put his talent in context, at age 19, his numbers when matched to others such as Alex Rodriguez, were far superior. Playing in the same outfield, he easily outhit future Hall-of-Famer Carl Yaztremski.

Tuesday night was an excellent showcase for Chris. As the game progresses, the American League ended up shutting out the National League 3-0 with the National League only putting together three hits for the game. The winning pitcher was Sale. Come October, because of the victory, the American League will have home field advantage for the World Series. As it stands right now, that may have even less action from Chicago teams then the All-Star game featured.

Mlb Playoff Tickets – A Look At The American League Playoff Races

The American League has seen the likes of Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee relocate to the national League. So Lester’s only competition should be Felix Hernandez and CC Sabathia. Hernandez will be hard-pressed to win 13 games again like he did last year despite a 2.27 ERA. Seattle’s offense and bullpen is just that bad. The Yankees’ Sabathia, despite still being only 30 years old, has logged over 230 innings in his last four seasons and has, remarkably, thrown over 180 innings in each of his 10 seasons in the majors. Might this be the year he breaks down? The Yankees don’t even want to consider the possibility.

Erik Bedard is slated to get the start for the Red Sox in this one. He is winless in three starts since coming over from Seattle at the end of July. The left-hander is 4-8 with an ERA of 3.44 in 19 starts this season. Lifetime against the Rangers, Bedard is 4-3 with a 3.22 Era.

If the second lefty can remain seated for an entire fortnight, it stands to reason that there will be even less use for a third lefty. And if Sergio Santos maintains his significant reverse splits, Ohman would actually be the fourth guy you’d want to see against a lefty.

American League Cy Young Award – Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox. I may have been one year too early in predicting John Lester would win this award last year. Then again, if Lester hadn’t gotten off to such a bad start last year (1-2, 4.71 ERA in April), his stats would’ve looked even better than his impressive final stat line of 19-9, 3.20 ERA. If Lester can get off to a fast start for a change (4.58 career ERA in April), anywhere between 20-23 wins is a possibility considering the revamped Red Sox lineup, the speedy outfield, and the improved (at least on paper) bullpen.

Jason Frasor is a graduate from Oak Forest High School and pitched for Southern Illinois University. His record this year is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.98, 37 strikeouts and 10 holds. Stewart was sent to the minors. Frasor will definately be an added bonus to the bullpen that already has sale jerseys, Matt Thornton and Sergio Santos.

In the second, he retired David Wright on a groundout to third, struck out Carlos Gonzalez on an impressive slider, and got Yadier Molina on a fly out. Then in the third, struck out Troy Tulowitzki, got Michael Cuddyer on a weak ground out, and finally got Home run derby runner up Bryce Harper on a line out.

Thus. I decided to do a little research. I consider myself a true sports fan. As you all know, I have teams that i am partial to and teams that I root against. However, I always root for tough fought clean competition.

Replays on television showed that the ball landed a few rows in fall territory. The umpires working that game didn’t get a chance to see that, though, because of Major League Baseball not having any replay system institutionalized. In the long run the loss didn’t hurt the Tribe. The Indians are headed to the playoffs as AL Central Division champs.

Indians Rotation Will Need Patience This Season

Before the White Sox played the Tigers at U.S. Cellular today, Kenny Williams pulled off a trade to cut payroll and help the bullpen. The Sox traded pitcher Edwin Jackson and infielder Mark Teahen to the Toronto Blue Jays for Oak Forest native Jason Frasor and prospect Zach Stewart. The blue Jays then traded Jackson to St. Louis in a multi-player deal for Cody Rasmus. Jackson came to the Sox last year in a deal that sent high prospect Daniel Hudson to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jackson was 7-7 with a 3.92 ERA and 97 strikeouts. Mark Teahen never really settled in with the Sox, having made several trips to the disabled list. He was batting only .209 with 3 homeruns and 11 RBIs.

Really, though, whatever quibbles I have with this lineup construction are very, very minor. It’s at least close to optimal, and that is certainly a good thing for future run production.

This ties in with arm strength, but could take longer to get back than his velocity. If Peavy’s arm is tiring after three or four innings going at full speed ahead (which, let’s be honest, is the only speed for him), then obviously he’ll need some time after the season starts to regain that stamina. If i had to guess, stamina would be the main reason why Peavy won’t be in the White Sox’s starting rotation in April-it’ll be the reason why he won’t be 100 percent until, say, early May.

Arizona is 6-4 in its last 10 games and just a half a game behind San francisco in the NL West. The Diamondbacks continue to be one of the biggest surprises this season with a record of 39-32. They are 17-17 on the road and 22-15 at home.

Assuming Beckham avoids that whole April-June thing that happened last year, he’s an ideal No. 2 hitter. He has plus on-base skills and good power-exactly why he should hit second. Hopefully, he won’t have the bat taken out of his hands too often to bunt-after all, isn’t one of Pierre’s greatest assets his base-stealing ability? If Beckham is allowed to swing away, the Sox lineup will have a lot more success.

The sale jerseys can lament that they didn’t see this Owens implosion coming, but there were red flags pretty early in Owens’ tenure with the sale jerseys.

24. Minnesota Twins – The big question in Minnesota is if Ron Gardenhire will keep his job. It’s unlikely the Twins will show much improvement for another couple of years.

Granted, Ohman certainly isn’t god-awful against lefties-his 3.84 career FIP vs. LH tells us that. And saying he’s superfluous to the roster is a bit of an overstatement; I’d rather have him on the roster than Williams or, say, Anthony Carter. A mediocre right-handed free agent reliever may have been a better addition to the team, but hey, if Will Ohman is the most questionable move Kenny Williams made this offseason.I’d say that’s a pretty good offseason.
